Pegasus News: Who says citizen journalism is boring? The Daily Peg shows us a little bit of the 'wedia' approach. It's the same way I cover meetings, too. So it must be exceptionally brilliant.... [Read More]

Great post. Did you know I'm off Lakeland and Eustis? Why wasn't I there? Why don't I know about this group?

I'll link from SAGA.

Mike Orren

Wow. You live like a quarter mile away from me. Had no clue. Proof of how Pegasus can bring communities together. Now we can go hang out at, um well, dangit-- there's no place in our neighborhood to hang out. See you at Walgreens.

But if it can save you from soft-core porn, bonus!

Bill Coleman

Mike, it was very interesting to read a third party account of last night's community meeting. When you've been right in the middle of things for so long it's good to see an objective account of what was said.

Mike Orren

Thanks, Bill. The cool thing is that I'm not actually a third party. I live in the neighborhood; have a stake and was transparent about that. I was thorough and transparent, but by no means objective. That's what can make citizens journalism on the neighborhood level so interesting.

Kimmy

The fact I came home to vote and found no real tangible info on the District 14 race was a bummer.
I'm almost in this neighborhood, so I thought it was interesting to read about the meeting. k

i don't remember who coined it, but i like the phrase 'hyper local' content.

we'll most likely never beat the 'big boys' on their own turf, but there's a *lot* of stuff they don't do because they must maintain profit margins. not that things like this won't need to worry about that, but there's a whole lotta news that doesn't get covered that people want to read.

i've been studying newspaper forums for a while now. very interesting things to note there, imho...

Mike Orren

I don't think that it's about beating anyone. (To be fair, that's been an evolution-- not my original position.) It's about (r)evolution of business model as technology and reader habits change.

The days of profit margin maintenence are waning. But I refuse to believe that there isn't a profit to be made delivering news that impacts people's lives at a hyperlocal level.

Mike Orren

Proof that Google adwords still has a long way to go. All this talk of citizen journalism is pulling up ads for for Citizen watches.
