» Pegasus News to Relaunch TexasGigs from Tapscott's Copy Desk
Aren't sure what TexasGigs.com is about? Let me assure you it has nothing to do with "going' frog giggin," as some in the Lone Star State's piney woods are occasionally known to do. [Read More]

Citizens/grassroots media still is in its infancy, and at Backfence, we greatly appreciate and value the many different experiments in this new form of media that are taking place around the country. While intelligent people can diagree on the merits of these various concepts, there's one misunderstanding in the Pressthink article that we should clear up: We require registration only for those who contribute content to the site. So our figure of 600 registered users represents the number of people who are actually writing, photographing and commenting for Backfence across our three communities. We're thrilled by that number, which is rising rapidly, and by their excellent daily contributions--in comparison, the Washington Post has only a couple of dozen reporters covering the entire counties where our three community sites are located.

Our audience, therefore, is far larger than our registered user base. We don't require any sort of registration or subscription to read our sites. They are free to all, and indeed, last month we had 12,000 unique visitors--well ahead of our plan.

We're looking forward to seeing the launch of Pegasus News in the new year!

Mark and Mike - What steps are you guys taking to verify traffic? I'm using raw logs and I wonder about rogue bots and also the press mentions here and there. How many of that 12k are local visitors and not tourists? Not trying to start a fight (honest!), but I think we all need to come up with some standards for tracking maybe? Circulation/Reach/Readership/Participation...

KP:

Not using anything but Sitemeter right now, but we're prelaunch. On the launch of the music site, we'll be starting out with DeepMetrix LiveStats, which is provided by our hosting company.

But I think that we all need to think hard before we fall into the same trap of dopey metrics as our newsprint forbears. Are you really selling clicks and pageviews? I think you've got something more valuable than that, and there's got to be a better metric out there.

There's some good discussion of whether eyeballs are the right thing (economically) to measure here.

I agree, Mike, which is why I brought it up and am interested in what you guys eventually go with.

Thanks for the linkage.
